Located in Morgantown West Virginia performing solo and playing
banjo
with The Stewed Mulligans, a rockin' old time stringband who have been playing for over 30 years.
Also played 5 string bass for 7 piece Latin band Sabor Latino from May 2000 to April 2001
performing merengue's, bachata's, cumbia's, plena's, salsa's
and calypso's.
Nashville Years, 1986-1998, 2002-2008
Session player and backup musician in Nashville. Wrote with and recorded for Dulcimer
legend David Schnaufer that also included Chet Atkins, Mark O'Conner, Albert Lee,and
Mark Knopfler. Played mandolin for Toni Price during her Nashville days. Recorded banjo for
Americana artist Hayseed that included Lucinda Williams. Opened for Townes Van Zandt and,
played the Everly Brothers Renuion with David Schnaufer. Recorded banjo for Michael Martin
Murphy's "A Cowboy Christmas" on Warner Bros. Records. Vince headlined at The Station Inn
in Nashville, and performed at Jim Roony's Birthday Party also at the Station Inn. Vince played
sessions for Garth Brooks songwriter Stephanie Davis with
Pat Flynn and Roy Husky Jr., and
taught "Reggae" Banjo at The Tennesse Banjo
Institute with Grammy winner Bela Fleck
and Ritchie Stearns from the The Horseflies. Vince played in a nine-piece
Country Reggae band
in a "Bubba-dub style" and recently recorded for Jim Roberts Ancient
Hands project, a pop tribal CD
with Ballaphone and Banjo that has Victor Wooten, Beth Neilsen Chapman, and Ezra Mohawk.
Vince played mandolin and dulcimer in Kim's Fables a Pop Rock band with Middle East flavor,
and he sang lead and wrote for his own
Reggae, Calypso, and Ska band The Flying Flamingo
in "Nashville...The Home of Reggae Music".
1999-2000 Lived in Austin Texas. Performed solo with the banjo and sang
lead with
Urban Roots, a mainstay of the Austin reggae scene. Vince was a member
of vocal diva
Toni Price's band and played at the famous weekly "Hippy Hour"
with her at the Continental Club.
1998-1999: Lived in Boulder Colorado fronting in his own reggae/ska/calypso
band Big Phatty
which toured the ski towns of the Colorado
Rockies. Worked with Leftover Salmon's Vince Herman as a duo.
Also played with local Old-time musicians at dances, weddings and festivals
and played rub-board in a Zydeco band
1972-1986: Home base was West Virginia where Vince first
heard Old-time music and took up the banjo and mandolin.
Traveled to various Old-Time festivals like Ivydale, Glenville and Galax. Met and picked with folks like
Sherman Hammons,Bobby Taylor, Frank George, JP Fraley, and numerous other Old-Time players.
Was in a number of
stringbands playing Mountain Music, Western and Popular Swing, Irish and a
little Bluegrass
and was funded by The West Virginia Arts
Humanities Council in 1975 and 1977 with The Boogerhole Revival.
Played banjo and mandolin for The Stewed Mulligans
a WV Old-Time Stringband that played on The Home Shopping Network
and Mountain Stage. In 1978 first heard the Reggae album The Harder They Come
and played bass
in the Mountain States first reggae band with Stu Archer and The Goodtones.
In 1980 Vince fronted for Small Axe who played
for the next 12 years.
0-1972: Grew up outside of New York City in Pearl River N.Y..
1965-66 started playing guitar when his Mom bought him and his sister guitars for xmas, and
he had one guitar lesson at 14. Vince was influenced by folk music of various kinds and early Bob Dylan,
and Woody Guthrie, and listended to the variety of music coming out of New York City in the 60's like Motown,
Underground Rock Radio, Jazz and Classical music.
Vince heard the album Will The Circle Be Unbroken
in 1970
which tuned him into Appalachian Songs and Tunes, and he was also influenced by 60's rock music
like The Beatles,
The Stones, Hendrix, etc.
The summer of 1972 Vince and a friend hitchiked to Miami Florida to hang in People's Park during the
Democratic National Covention, then on to DC where at the National Mall he heard an old time band
called
The Highwoods Sting Band and it was a life altering occasion. Upon arriving in Morgantown
he
heard more old time and he fell in love with the WV mountains, culture and it's music.
